The latest on the New York Times reports anti-government protests have turned violent in the Republic of Georgia. It seems like only yesterday my family and I were walking these streets. We were fortunate enough to visit our friends (Piso and her family) in 1998 during a brief break in the difficult times their country has faced since the break up of the Soviet Union. Georgia is a magnificent country with ancient wonders and strong\, dedicated people. It's sad and scary to see such an amazing place fall into chaos once again!
Unfortunately, a working democracy is never as easy as it seems it should be. Perhaps it's a lesson that we should have realized from our own (US) history or by seeing the huge struggles that the people in so many countries (like the Republic of Georgia) have gone through, before we decided to go into Iraq! No matter what happens politically, I wish all of the people in Georgia peace, freedom from corruption and long-term stability!
